Tracking the trajectory of a thrown ball

mediumsubjectivesystem design

Asked in interviews

How would you track the trajectory of a thrown/flying ball? What motion model do you use, what makes it easier or harder than tracking a vehicle, and how do you handle bounces?

predicted landing— observed— predicted (a = −g)
Under gravity a thrown object follows a parabola; a constant-acceleration model (a = −g) lets the tracker predict the arc and landing point from just a few observations.
